These Rules Aren’t Meant to be Broken Rules
Maybe I’m crazy, but in the myriad of amateur sports associations across the country, don’t they play tennis matches, rec basketball games, softball leagues and more by the rules? So why is it that so many avid “core” golfers still have no clue about the rules of golf? From the “foot wedge” in a friendly match to serious rules infractions in club championships, I am amazed how few players know, or want to know, the rules. Are these rules for real? Rules
My mother was sweet enough to think of me when she saw a book on golf at her local thrift store. As a non-golfer she picked it up because she thought it was cute. Several caricatures of golfers embellished the cover. “I think it’s a joke book” she said over the phone. Nope, no joke. It turns out the book is an official version of Decisions on the Rules of Golf. International amateur golf has passed its first drug test; what lies ahead? Rules
Last week, after random testing of twelve competitors at the World Amateur Team Championship in South Africa, the USGA announced the results of all samples were negative. The NCAA has an established year round drug testing program. The latest published results (2003-2004 season) indicated no doping with regard to golf. Opinions on whether drug testing is needed for golf are mixed. When I think “doping” and I look at the current list of NCAA banned substances (without a background in pharmaceuticals wading through the list is a bit daunting) I wonder if bigger, stronger, faster can truly help ...
