Cape Cod Amateur Golf Championship 2007

(posted Oct 29, 2007)

The Cape Cod Times put out some nice coverage of the this fall classic. But did anyone happen to snap some pictures? Our favorite photog was too busy winning his first round match this year to stop for pictures…

GFTG would love to post pics of the event. Between Hyannisport Golf Club’s beautiful setting and the always interesting weather I’ll bet there were some great photo ops. Email us if you have any good shots for posting.

It takes a true force of nature to stop the Cape Cod Amateur. It wasn’t the near hurricane force winds that brought play to a halt on the second weekend of the tournament, but rather flooded greens and truly unplayable conditions - a phrase which is obviously relative to this particular tournament, unlike any other. I’m quite sure the pros would not have played through the same conditions.

The guys are blessed with a kitten of a day today in comparison. If not a golfer’s dream day, it’s better than many days on which the Amateur has played out, a tournament known for historically tough conditions.

As often happens, there are a few Dennis Pines players left in the mix as of the moment. Here’s to the home boys!

Congratulations to Kevin Carey for another fine performance, capturing yet one more win in the Cape Cod Amateur Golf Championship.

Any contestant in this annual and generally grueling test of golf can expect to play through rough, if not down right abysmal, conditions. Horrid weather is so much a tradition that it truly an anomaly if the weather proves benign throughout the full competition.

Making it past the qualifier is occasion enough for celebration. Surviving through 41 holes on the fourth and final day and emerging the winner should qualify a man for a medal - maybe a purple heart, it’s so brutal - not to mention the usual celebratory cup.

By Kevin’s own admission, it was an exhausting final day. But true to his congenial nature, he took time after the tournament to share a few moments with friends. On his return to home turf I greeted him in congratulations and asked “’so how many is this?” And the now eight-time Cape Cod Champion answered simply “I don’t know, but this makes four in a row.”

FOUR. CAPE COD AMATEUR WINS. IN A ROW.

Not to mention the other four. That totals more bad weather than I every want to play in. And I’ll bet that of course he knows just exactly how many times he’s won the Amateur - but that’s Kevin.

He is not some privileged son of extraordinary means. His time on the golf course is much more limited than one might expect. He is an average working Joe with a major aptitude for golf. It is nearly impossible to get in his head in a tournament; but off the course he always more than willing to impart his knowledge and is graciously adept at sharing his experiences with golfers of any ability.

Congratulations, again, to an exceptional golfer in so many ways. Kevin Carey, we’re proud to know you!
