Golf Fore the Good is here to celebrate a sport that I, and so many others, love; a game that engages us at such a level that the uninitiated consider us “obsessed.” It is an attempt to fill a void that I feel exists for the avid, amatuer golfers whose lives would not be the same without the unique and compelling game we play. While the PGA and the LPGA, along with other professional tours, receive substantial coverage from many media outlets, there is little fanfare made of the dedicated amatuer golfer.
An enormous amount of time and energy is spent by avid golfers participating in local and regional competitions; aside from some local news briefs or cut-and-dried posted results where can one turn for the inside scoop on these golf tournaments? Hopefully, as we grow, Golf Fore the Good will provide that venue. Input from the golfing public on charity events, local tournaments and leagues and even friendly rivalries is welcome.
We are here to highlight amateur golf as well as the charitable spirit shown by so many golfers who give so much through a myriad of benefit tournaments. Our golf blog posts thoughts and commentary on a variety of topics with which you might not always agree but I do still hope you enjoy. You’ll also find some useful information and links for more golf information. We welcome visitors’ input as well and expect that will add to the overall enjoyment of the site as we grow.
On a more personal level, I am a slightly better than average handicapper living and working on Cape Cod in a golf crazy town with my like-handicapped husband and Frisbee obsessed, goose chasing Border Collie. I retired just a few years ago, after 25 years, from a very unique and creatively stimulating career and now find myself a bit stifled by scheduling conflicts that keep me away from the golf course as well as from the lack of an artistic venue.
I am gainfully employed and sport a USGA handicap that doesn’t embarrass me. What I don’t have at this time in my life is the kind of feel good job that allows me to “pay it forward.” At the very least, Golf Fore the Good will end up a mere creative outlet for this Cape Cod golfer, one who suffers too short a season during which there is never enough time to play all the golf I’d like. At best it will evolve into a respected site golfers will visit and enjoy.
The main Golf Fore the Good blog allows my golfing persona to bond with a long-ago side of my life; a time when I was never far from a good book, or paper and pen; when I slept with a notebook on the bedside table to record my many thoughts that tumbled about; the part of me that needs to create and share a word or two with others. I hope you enjoy browsing through our pages.
The long term goal of Golf Fore the Good (the short term, obviously, is to be my creative outlet and sooth my golf obsession) is to attract enough of an audience that it will generate some revenue with the goal of giving back to various charitable organizations, both golf and non-golf related. Our first published article proudly generated proceeds for the Dana Farber Cancer institute. We hope there will be many more such opportunities in our future!
This site is a labor of love. We take a few steps forward and a couple steps back but we’re making progress. It would please me to no end to find a web-savvy golf lover who can help take GFTG to the next level. I’m spending a lot of (frustrating!) time testing many platforms to facilitate out growth and to allow the hosting of individual golf blogs and websites, free of charge to members. We are currently very near that goal with the recent creation of our test site running on Wordpress MU!
Our readership is growing by leaps and bounds; something is really starting to click! Please spread the word, and visit us often for new content. For more information, please contact us.
