Winter Golf

Winter Golf Blues

I live and golf in New England. It isn’t easy for a golf addict to get through the winter here. However, my specific location on the sandy little peninsula of Cape Cod usually allows for at least sporadic play throughout the winter months; ocean waters surrounding the Cape accommodate the area with more moderate temperatures and many more snow free days than the mainland. While just north of us, and inland, the snow cover comes early and stays late, on the Cape we pray for - and are often granted - rain instead of snow. We had just such a rain the other day, and with bare ground in sight and the mercury at a comfortable high in the mid-thirties, the courses on Cape Cod will be jammed this weekend. My personal state of desperation to play a round will remain unsatiated until the temps climb into the forties.

Winter weather has been frustrating golfers since the game began. Check out this NY Times article on snow golf in 1898.

A little further north, even the youngest of golfers feel the pain of winter snow cover.

Or head to Oklahoma to the Tenkiller Golf Club, where they claim to play every day of the year, no matter what!
