In the mild of winter in the northern climes, we have way too much time to think about golf and not nearly enough opportunity to play it. Nasty weather and snow cover doesn’t mean we stop obsessing about golf altogether. I can’t stop wondering about a few things in golf that have always puzzled me.
What happens to all the pencils from golf courses? Does anybody ever take them home and sharpen them? Why do you never see the stub of a golf pencil?
If you are allowed to tee it up on the tee box, why can’t we tee it up everywhere else? The tee box is already the best, most level lie you’re going to find through the green and it even gets easier with a tee. Who decided it’s against the rules to tee it up on a down hill lie, just where you really need it?
Why is taking a mulligan a shameless cheat? Baseball has foul tips, basketball players get foul shots, soccer enjoys a penalty kick, tennis has lets… it seems like everyone gets a free extra chance except golfers. Like the game isn’t hard enough.
A basketball hoop is 18″ across. Hockey goals are six feet wide. Soccer goals are eight feet wide and have a massive 192 square feet of possible entry space. A football player is allowed the width of the whole darn field to score a goal (goal, touchdown, or whatever; I am terribly football deficient!) So why do golfers expect to project a very small ball into a lousy 4 1/4″ cup?
I really need to get golf off my mind. I can’t wait until spring when I can go out and play a few holes.
Hi Velia - Happy New Year with much prosperity for the golf game and life!!
Silly thoughts–LOL, but–
golf pencils are stubs already; most level if your not on some of the “forward” tee boxes; mulligan shameless cheat–not in my group; and in football it’s a touchdown (unless you’re talkn’ European football)!
Hi V,
The pencils end up on the restaurants bar and eventually to golf pencil heaven.
