Spring Fever

All things being relative, this has been an unusually mild winter in New England in general and especially here on Cape Cod. With barely a dusting of snow as of yet, we’re running toward the middle of March and facing weekend temperatures in the fifties. Of course, we’re still left with the uncertainty of late winter weather and the fickleness of our spring, such as it is. Record snows could still blanket us at any time. But spring is definitely in the air.

It may be that we’re all feeling a little house bound; or maybe we’re just crazy; but the courses around here are filling up again, long before what most people would consider the arrival of golf weather. Just this week I stopped for a late afternoon Frisbee run with the dog at the Highlands Golf Course. It was already after five o’clock, temperatures were in the mid-thirties and the wind chill was well below that. I wasn’t totally surprised to see a foursome finishing up on eighteen, ski hats and gloves and all. What might have been deemed unplayable weather last fall is just a little winter golf on the Cape.

Locally, the Captains Golf Course is not only open for play but has lined up a full slate of lessons and programs at their Cape Cod Golf Academy. From club fitting, through swing analysis, fitness programs and more they’re offering an impressive list of ways to get your game in shape for the coming season. This weekend’s fair weather forecast should allow at least a little time on the range or even a game or two if your schedule allows. And when the winter chill comes barreling back next week sometime, and you can be quite sure it will, then head on over to Captains for a whack at their golf simulator. Now that I can handle.
