What is it about golf? It frustrates us, consumes us; chews us up and spits us out. We get aggravated and aggrieved and we swear we’ll put away the clubs for good. But as the saying goes, a bad day on the golf course beats a good day… well, pretty much anywhere.
If there was ever a day I wished I could have knocked it around for a few holes, that day was today. Nearly in the same breathe this afternoon, my friend and I lamented our weather imposed exile from the links. Life and work stresses have piled up. In less than a week, between the two of us, no fewer than four friends and acquaintances names have graced the obituaries. Despite the fact that the days are growing slightly longer, the grayness of winter permeates our existence and spring feels light years away.
Some might want nothing more than to pull the covers up over their heads and to hibernate until sunnier times. We just want to play golf.
Had we the opportunity it would be click, pack and off on Jet Blue, clubs in tow. There is nothing like three or four days of 27 holes to block out the real world. That option being unavailable to us at the moment we sigh, count our blessings and regroup. Barring unbearable wind chill, we’ll whack a bucket at the range this weekend.
Whatever frustrations our golf game presents in season, this week puts it all in perspective. However, I can’t shake the thought that the zillions of hours we spend on the course and the zillion more dollars we spend on golf related expenses is perhaps better spent than the hours and dollars shelled out in the name of therapy for those still huddled under their covers.
This I know for a fact; life is short; swing away.
