AJGA announces newest Polo Golf Rankings

I seldom suffer regrets in my life (whether from good decision making, which I doubt, or from a lack of conscience). One of the very few is that I didn’t learn to play golf at an earlier age. Golf was decidedly not cool in the 70’s, nor was it accessible to the average Joe, at least not in my neck of the woods. Even if someone had offered me the opportunity to play I doubt I could have been lured from the glamour of team sports. Had I only known then what I know now…

The ability we see demonstrated today in the junior ranks is exceptional. Their fluid, natural swings are a wonder; their flexibility, an inspiration to keep up with my Pilates! Imagine, according to the new AJGA Polo Golf Rankings released today, the top fifty boys boast a scoring record of 71.4; the girls average for the top fifty is 74.9.

Some of these amazingingly talented kids are barely into high school. It is no wonder we’re seeing younger and younger players winning on the professional tours. The quality of coaching, the experience they garner through junior programs and certainly their dedication has to be outstanding at such an intense level of competition.

Consider as well the monetary cost to the players and their families in order to participate in enough events to even join the rankings. It is estimated only ten percent of U.S. youths aged 5-17 are involved in golf. Many more express an interest in playing. Most likely financial concerns are a large part of the equation, resulting in the small segment currently involved in the sport. Just imagine what untapped potential might be out there!
